So you didn't format your clix/clix2 after firmware update and nothing bad happen, and now you wonder why we want you to format your player so much?
My answer:

No, you don't have to format, but you need to do it in order not to 'choke' your clix.
Not formating after firmware update often results in lagging on music / video playback or extremely slow navigation respond because the older database won't get updated along side with the firmware. Therefore you need to format the player in order to 'clean out' all the old database and allows your clix to rebuild a new one according to the new firmware's spec. You might or might not face these problems (listed above), but it is a very common problem that happens frequently to users who choose not to format, so why take the chance? Leaving it as it is essentially just turns it into an unpredictable time bomb.
Now as we told you why you should format, the rest is up to you.

We never know when there is a database change and when there isn't so the safest thing to do is to always act as if there was. The problems you can encounter can be subtle or manifest and in the most extreme cases you can brick your player (I've seen it more then once). My advice is "Put the gun down son, it ain't worth it."

In sum, we have seen too many problems arise from not formating, so we strongly advise you to format your player after firmware update. You should of course
back up (by copy and paste to PC) your player before formating so you can get back the thing you want to keep.
