Exclamation Using Clix2 with Winamp 5.5

Winamp is a great media player for Windows, but it can be daunting at first. If you're fresh in from iRiver Plus 3 (gag) or iTunes (no direct interface with Clix!), take a look at how to use the best Windows media player with your Clix!

(Please excuse my pictures, I don't have a decent way to draw arrows!)

What you need:
  • Winamp 5.5+ (I haven't tested anything lower); I am using the default Bento skin
  • iRiver Clix generation 2 (of course)
  • Windows Media Player 10 or 11 (for MTP functionality in Windows)
  • Windows XP (I imagine Vista works similarly)

1) make sure your Clix is set to MTP mode: Settings->Advanced->Connection Type->MTP (WARNING!!! this will format your Clix and you'll lose anything that's on there...)

2) Plug in the Clix to the USB and fire up Winamp. You should see a Portables section, and the iRiver Clix should be listed there. Depending on how full your Clix is, it may take a little bit to process. (Picture 1)winamp1.jpg

3) If this is your first time using a portable device with Winamp, you'll probably want to change some settings. In Winamp, go to Options->Preferences->Portables->iRiver Clix

3a) SYNC: With Winamp you can sync playlists. You can choose to make a static playlist or a smart playlist, like in iTunes or other programs. I won't go into that here. In the SYNC tab of the Clix settings, you can choose your Syncing options. If you want to keep synced, I suggest this method because I bet your library on your computer is much larger than the storage space on your Clix. (Picture 2)

3b) AUTOFILL: Autofill will fill up your Clix with songs. (NOTE: each time you do an Autofill, it will delete some songs already on the Clix and replace them with others. It tries to give you new songs every time you use it.) In this tab you can set how much of the Clix you want to fill, and also if you have your media library rated, you can choose to fill with higher-rated songs. This is also a good time to choose what kind of files go into your Clix. That's what the “query” thing is about. For example, I have my query set so that it doesn't try to Autofill with songs under 30 seconds that are .ogg, .flac, and are also rated over 4. Mess around with those settings by pressing Edit Query. (Picture 3)

We'll leave Transcoding and View alone for now. In short, transcoding will let you automatically encode an unreadable file (say FLAC or OGG) to something that the Clix can read.

4) Hopefully you have your sync/autofill settings satisfactorily setup, so let's hit Close which brings us back to the main window. Now, choose your poison, Sync or Autofill! (Picture 4)

5) Make sure to hit Eject when you want to unplug your Clix. I don't know as it's really necessary, but it might be better to get into the habit...

Reply or PM me if you want any clarification or have more detailed questions!
