I've just got a clix2 from my dad and as he's rather un-technical its in a rather bad state. When i turn it on it comes up with a black screen saying "player update required please refer to the manual." I refered to the manual and downloaded the firmware updater but the updater won't recognize that the clix is connected. I can see it in my computer but if i try to enter it it tells me it is corrupted.
Any advice on what to do would be most appreciated.

Try resetting it first. It may be possible to format it from the clix menus (this will delete all data), although if the firmware is corrupted that may not work. If you can get to the point where it works like an empty USB drive, then a manual firmware update should be possible.

But if ip3 sees the clix (after a reset), you should probably try letting that do the update first. I believe that the standalone updater is for use with MTP mode - if the clix is in UMS/MSC mode use ip3 or do it manually. More details are in the FAQ.

I got my iriver back from their RMA offices after they repaired a display problem for me, but it seems it's come back with some issues of it's own. When I shut the player down and hit the power button to turn it back on, it's not the opening screen that I get, but rather my home screen - essentially it's as if it's never shutting down properly. The only way I get it to look like it's really shut down and re-started is if I hit reset.

Plus, I've set my smartkey to change the orientation of the player. It used to be landscape and then turn into portrait mode and vice versa. Now when I press the smartkey, it goes landscape -> portrait -> landscape upside down -> portrait facing the other way -> landscape (normal).

Is this probably some mixing up that they've done when they opened it to fix it the display or something else entirely?

Point 1 sounds as if the clix is setup to sleep rather than power down. You can change that in the menus. Point 2: cycling around the four orientations is normal behaviour when the smart key is programmed to 'Display Orientation'. I don't know how you got it to do anything different before.

Hey gunslinger, you might check what song is playing when your clix crashes. I had a similar problem and it turned out to be a set of songs that was crashing it. Have you upgraded your firmware?

We don't really have iRiver support here in America either My ultimate solution was to buy a new Clix and I haven't had any problems since...

What is the voice detector's purpose at recording settings? What is the difference between on and off?

Thanks in advance.

If it doesn't detect any sound, it will pause the recording till it detects a sound again - to save space. When off, it will keep recording no matter what.
