iTunes + Clix2: A quick guide

I recently acquired the 8gb Clix Redline, and immediately went about figuring out how to fill this beautiful mp3 player, and keep it updated, whilst still using iTunes as my media player of choice. I found a highly effective method which incorporates a wonderful feature of iTunes and the clix-bundled software, iriver plus 3.

First, you'll want to select an option in iTunes that will keep your music organized by artist, album, etc. and automatically consolidates your library, keeping a copy within the "my music/itunes/itunes music" folder.
In iTunes, go to Edit > Preferences > Advanced. Select the "General" tab, and check both the "Keep iTunes Music folder organized" box and the "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library" box.

Now, whenever you import a song to iTunes (from a CD, from Limewire, etc), the program will automatically make a copy of that song and organize it. All you have to do now is import these organized songs into iriver plus 3!

Go into iriver plus 3, and click File > Add Media. When it opens up an explorer menu, select "My Music > iTunes > iTunes Music." Tell it to add songs, and you're done! Wait for it to import all the songs, and then just select the ones you want to send to your Clix, and click the red arrow button!

*Note that I am working on a Windows PC, with XP installed; I'm not sure that this method would work on a Mac.*

I'll sticky this.
It would be great if you could add some pictures(screenshots) and headings.

Thanks for this,
Mattman.

I want to see if I could get iTunes to work fully with the clix - i.e. you can put songs onto the clix without having to use iriver plus.

Apple provide a software development kit for free, so that developers can create custom programs. I was halfway there.

Unfortunetly iRiver do not create a similar kit for the iriver plus. If they did, I could have created the program and shared it.

Obviously, this program would not work for any music that was copy protected.

Actually, there is a way to essentially go straight from iTunes to your clix...as long as you are in MSC(UMS) mode:

Open My Computer>Gor whatever your clix is)>Music, and simply select songs from iTunes and drag them into the music folder. You may need to select all your iTunes songs and convert their id3's, though, from the "Advanced" menu. This entails converting each of your songs by selecting them, going to Advanced > Convert id3 tags... > 1d3 tag version 1.0. With this method you will not get album art...but to many of us, that isn't incredibly important.

I believe you must be in MSC mode to drag-and-drop songs from iTunes to your Clix music folder.

And I don't think the Clix will play .aac files... so if you're trying to transfer your music files over, make sure they're not downloaded from iTunes as .aac files.

That's correct. I also believe the files can't be protected, meaning those 99-cent songs you bought are right out.

Would anyone know if I can, or how, use Smart Playlists, from iTunes on the Clix2?

Would anyone know if I can leave my Clix2 on MSC, or do I have to change it to MTP if I want to use SyncTunes?

Sorry for the double post.

I would image that you'd need it on MSC, as SyncTunes looks for a Mass Storage Device to synch with (From the FAQs: "Question: What devices are supported? Answer: Most mass storage devices should be supported. The only criteria for iTunes Agent to be able to synchronize your device is that it is mapped to a drive letter under "My Computer" in Windows.")

If you haven't switched it to MSC yet (from MTP) be aware that it will reformat your clix and erase all content, including themes, music, pix, etc. Back-up your player ... or if it's too late, you can find the original content on this site.
