My Clix 2/U20 Disassembly Guide

My Clix 2/U20 Disassembly Guide

******** Be Warned, This may very well VOID any warranty you have on your Clix ********
!follow these steps at your own risk; I hold no responsibility for the accurateness of this article!

Requirements
  • 1 x iRiver Clix 2 or U20!
  • 1 x Small Flat blade Instrument Screwdriver (max 3mm shaft)
  • 1 x Small Phillips (crosshead) Instrument Screwdriver
  • Finger nails
  • A clean work surface (optional)
Step 1.
Insert your Small Instrument Screwdriver into the headphone socket, may sound bizarre but all will become clear! (see here).

Step 2.
Apply light pressure to the screwdriver, I pressed the clix down onto the screwdriver, it will travel about 4-5mm then hit a definite stop. Inside this push a spring loaded release mechanism.

Step 3.
Now this is the most difficult bit, with the pressure still applied on the screwdriver hook your middle finger nails in between the screen(top) and base(bottom) at the two corners on the side with the hold switch on and your right hand thumb nail in between the screen(top) and base(bottom) in the middle of the side with the volume control buttons on.

Step 4.
Now apply even (quite heavy) downward pressure with you middle fingers, and outward (light) force with your right hand thumb. The screen should slide down and out (see here).

Step 5.
You should now have released all 6 clips that hold the screen onto the base, all that is hold the two parts together now in the interconnecting ribbon cable (see here).

This has a push fit connector and sticky tape holding it down that can be gently levered up to separate the two parts.

Step 6.
Remove the 8 small silver screws from the base (one is hidden under a small piece of protective foam by the microphone), then gently lever off the headphone socket retaining bracket and USB port retaining bracket (see here).

Step 7.
Then carefully lever out the main circuit board from the headphone socket end (see here).

And you done, disassembled!

i am so glad that there is a forum for this problem because i just dropped my clix 2 4 gb as well and the screen is blank. However when i connect it with my usb, there is a very thin line of weird color on the side of my clix. With my memory, i managed to click my way into a song and it worked. If i were to Rma this, would i be able to get this clix exchanged or fixed under warranty? even though it kinda functions? I would love to call them but... its Sunday. Thanks a million to M4tt8 for even disassembling it for us but Matt, what would i need to do in order to cure the blank screen issue? assuming Iriver will not fix it for me?

This seems to be a simple problem of loose connector due to the fall. If you can't get iriver to repair it for you, you can get it open and reconnect the socket between the screen and the mainboard (3rd pic in post #1).

I saw your post on MisticRiver, just want to make sure you double check with iriver America to see if they want to cover the warranty or not (since you bought your from The iriver Store, they might charge you for it). Also, as I posted on MR, email Jeff first.

yeah i did, but he's not replying, i think it's the vacation thing. i just called iriveramerica today and they told me the purchase email confirmation should be good enough, just print it out and fax it to us. I'm assuming it's now all clear sailing, unless there's some sort of accept reject process they run when they look at your clix, which is probable. will they? i mean, my clix looks like it was just opened yesterday, except a few tiny tiny scratches on the pre-attached protection sticker.

The whole repairing process starts as they check your clix2 serial number, if the number belongs to the U.S. region, than it'll automatic under iriver America's warranty (of course, the purchasing date is needed to confirm you still with in the coverage date). Anyway, since I don't know what region are your clix2 is from, I can only assume at this point that all clix2 sold by Jeff 'should be' the same as iriver America, which means your player should be covered by the iriver America's warranty

I dropped mine and screen is distorted (has lines running through it) sometimes when I turn it on, it's fine. B/C I bought mine off of ebay, Iriver will cover it on their warranty. I'm going to try to open it and check the connection. I let you know how it goes.

PS don't by these of ebay, mine was new and a US version, and still Iriver won't help.

"Greetings,

I appreciate you contacting the iriver America Customer Support Team. Please FAX the proof of purchase to (714) 953-8466 and on that FAX, please write "Attention: Email Support." Also, please provide us with your full name, current address, a phone number, email address incase we need to contact you and the product (model number, color and harddrive size), the serial number (which is often located on the back of the device) and a brief explanation of the issue you are experiencing with the mp3 player device. Please provide us with ALL of the requested information for us to expedite the issue (ALL INFORMATION MUST BE PROVIDED). If you purchased the item through eBay, we DO NOT support any transaction on eBay unless they are an authorized distributor of iriver.

Once we have verified the proof of purchase, I can then further assist you with instructions on how to send the product to the repair center if the item is still within the one year warranty. If this is an accessory, there is a 3 month warranty. If the item is not within the one year warranty, unfortunately, I am unable to personally assist you with this matter as the repair is out of warranty. You can have the repairs done by a third-party affiliate of iriver. Please visit and contact theiriverstore at http://www.theiriverstore.com for details and information on repair services. I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. If you should have any further concerns, please submit another e-mail for us to happily assist you with. Thank you for contacting the iriver Customer Support Team and for your continued support.

Best Regards,

The iriver Customer Support Team"

Thumbs up

Today I accidently did let drop my Clix2 and it fell about 3 meters down on a hard floor.
The display did half open and I deceided to fully open it (Thx for the great tutorial m2tt8).

After replacing the front again, I recognized that the micro buttons didn't really work fine anymore. After opening and mounting it like 10 times I did not really see a big success. The clicking did still not work smooth like it was at the first day I received it. After playing a bit around, I recognized that you have to slighly lift all the 4 edges with your finger nail (one by one) and push the front a bit to the left and right. In the end, this worked for me very well to get it back to a smooth clicky operation.

I just thought to post this, in case someone encounters a similar problem.
By the way, I am still very surprised the plastic didnt brake, this bugger seems more robust than I thought it would be

This post should be compulsory to read for users that complain that "It feels so cheap and fragile", 3 METERS!!!
