Wink Other (free) programs to convert video for clix2

My clix2 is in UMS mode (USB Drive) and I don't see a reason to put it in MTP and use windows explorer and Media Player 11 to do simple things.
As this post is getting quite long (now that I decided to put pics in it) I will summarise here what follows.
  • AVIDemux ::where:: (5/5 rating) - once you set it right (0 B-Frames) you'll love it, lots of options / filters, fast, great quality. Imagine a VirtualDub on steroids with MEncoder power. Also being a native LINUX app, it will do just fine outside windows I guess
  • Badak ::where:: (4/5 rating) - fast, more options than iRiveter, subs, does 2pass.
  • SUPER ::where:: (4/5 rating) - fast, lots of options, no sub support, no 2pass
  • GOMEncoder ::where:: (3/5 rating) - an easy 5/5 but that watermark & online check is annoying. I could say its the best right out of the box (has clix1 profile included, for clix2 you just leave the frames alone), wonderfull sub support, plenty of options, not so fast (if you do 2pass) but great video/audio quality.
  • XvidForPSP ::where:: (3/5 rating) - once you set right is fast and good, also does DVD-rip, no batch processing, limited sub support, can't save settings (having to set it again for every file = annoying).
  • iRiveter ::where:: (3/5 rating) - fast, no subs, no 2pass
  • KawaiiRiver ::where:: (2/5 rating) - java based, fewer options than iRiveter
  • PocketDivXEncoder ::where:: (1/5 rating) - a SUPER (c) clone I could't quite figure out.
  • MediaCoder ::where:: (1/5 rating) - for the hardcore user, if you set it right it will even bring coffee in the morning...
  • iRiver Movie Converter (1/5 rating) - only wmv, depends on installed codecs
  • iRIVER 3 Plus (1/5 rating) - too much trouble if you just want video conversion
  • YouTube Conversion ((by BongMong)) & other usefull progs
I will continue below to explain various encoding details for the programs I have succesfully used with Clix2. (I have left only picture links to speed up page load. All pics are PNG optimized -16c - and on imageshack.us). Where possible I will atach encoder profiles.

iRiver Movie Converter v1.021
Anyway, I used the iRiver Movie Converter succesfully until it didn't work one day. I found it to be quite limited and slow and only produced WMV. Now, most of the time I get a "codec not installed" error.
- WMV looks good on the player but it can be better.
- It can burn the subs on the movie (as long as they are in SMI format)
- Not many settings to mess with
- You get a guaranteed playable file.
- Slow. Very slow.

iRiver 3 Plus
- First time I tried to use it I could't convert anything. (must be the MSC/MTP thing, that gave me an e2 error all the time).
- Second time I tried I couldn't find the video convert option. (And if you MUST connect the device before the option appears, I'm not interested...)
- Another annoyance, everytime I install it, upon first run it MUST download the updates (50-60 MB of files takes a while) and no user option not to.

iRiveter v0.16
- Nice and simple. Too simple actually.
- It is fast, but quality is worse than the competition on lower bitrates (350 kbps for example), and no settings to improve that except increasing bitrate, that in turn increases filesize.
- No subs.
- I see that it can rip DVDs but I have not tried it.
- v1.17 (the java one) installed all over my HDD and I wiped it out...

Badak v2007.1007 (* updated)
I have installed the new Badak once I have found a (slow) link :: here :: which is also in english and newer than RobbieK's.
- Lots of options
- Can do 2 pass encoding -> better videos at lower bitrates.
- Unlike iRiveter here you can modify all the options, also with a dual-core specific option.
- Limited subtitle support (only SMI), can choose font and size (nice!)

- v2007.1007 looks better than the previous. (more polished and ergonomic main screen at least, main window is still big, option window even bigger !!!)
- Upon startup you get the preset list. (clix1 with low/med/high is present)
- Here I saved a Clix2 profile :Badak_Clix2_profile.zip (unpack to ...BADAK\presets\ and click [Open Preset] button on main window)
- I will explain the options below:

[Settings]--> [Video / Audio / Subtitle] Options
- [Video]
-- Video bitrate : 368 kbps + 112 kbps audio will make ~ 3.5 MB / minute of video, if you have the space you can go higher. Check the source (with G-Spot), so you won't go above the original!. A bitrate lower than 300 will produce much uglier video than small file sizes....
-- Frames per second : FPS, as you know, can be anything up to 30 for Clix2. If your source is something like 23.976 / 25 / 29.997 why change it? Anything that requires conversion is going to take longer and degrade the final quality. On the other hand less frames means smaller size and faster compression and can trigger audio sync problems.
-- Resize : You MUST check and set it to 320x240.
-- Change vid ratio : if your source is WS (WideScreen) an A/R ratio of 1.77 is suggested.

- For example, a movie of 624x352 has a 1.77 A/R.
- Clix2 having a 320x240 screen, only supports a 1.33 A/R.

--- Fullscreen Stretch : does what it says, ugly if you convert something different than 1.33 A/R.

- [Audio]
-- Audio Codec : has to be MP3 Lame.
-- Audio bitrate : is what make the audio quality. Higher is better but increases filesize. Test first if you plan to do many files...
-- Encoding algorithm : this relates to the MP3 quality (0= highest quality / longer to process 9 = lowest quality) (thanks BongMong for pointing out the mistake!)

Bitrate is of course the main influence on quality. The higher the bitrate, the higher the quality. But for a given bitrate, we have a choice of algorithms to determine the best scalefactors and Huffman encoding (noise shaping).
-q 0: use slowest & best possible version of all algorithms. -q 0 and -q 1 are slow and may not produce significantly higher quality.
-q 2: recommended. Same as -h.
-q 5: default value. Good speed, reasonable quality.
-q 7: same as -f. Very fast, ok quality. (psycho acoustics are used for pre-echo & M/S, but no noise shaping is done.
-q 9: disables almost all algorithms including psy-model. poor quality.


This settings are indeed not related to VBR (something Clix2 doesn't know) and ar the same LAME "q" settings as in AviDemux or anything else using LAME.
For AviDemux q2 seems to be the default, and for BADAK q7.
-- Audio mode : stereo / joint / dual / mono (choose whatever, it will play)
-- ABR settting : I tested CBR / ABR - both work, ABR obviously makes smaller files. (to be on the safe side, pick CBR)
-- Sample rate : if you change it and it is different from the movie, you could have sync problems. Clix2 plays up to 48000 so no prolems here, as most audio doesn't go higher than this.

- [Subtitle]
-- Not much to say here, its pretty obvious - position size, font etc
-- ONLY *.smi format is supported. (you will have to convert your srt / sub files to "stamp" them on your movie)
-- Must check that "Mix subtitle..."

[General Settings]
--> Volume Normalize (why not on audio page ?),
--> Subs Char Set (why not on subs page?) - only Unicode Blocks,
--> CPU Priority (normal / low)
--> Mutithreading is not making any difference if activated (not on my 6550 anyway...)


GOMEncoder (* updated)
Being a GOMPlayer user (everyday, actually) I have tried the GOMEncoder from ( :: here ::)

- Software is considered Beta and free with nags, but no limitations except watermark. I really like it, but most definitelly will not be FREE.
- latest version expires Dec 31 2007. After that you'll just have do download another beta.
- requires on-line verification (on every program start)
- watermarks a small GomEncoder logo for the first 20 sec, IN THE MIDDLE of the movie (which is noticeable).
- It comes with a Clix1 profile (and many other mobile devices)
- Is able to 2pass encoding (only bitrate based - you cannot set desired final size)
- Has excellent subtitle support (SRT, shadow, tranparency, font, size etc.)
- Image processing (brightnes, contrast, hue saturation)
- Video effects (blur, deblock, sharpen, deinterlace, flip)
- Supports winamp DSP plugins (nice!)
- You can aply a custom logo on the movie, and also set playback speed (with audio correction).

Below I will detail, some of the Output Settings.
Also a profile for you here: GOMEncoder_Clix2_profile.zip To use it, unpack to "...Program Files\GRETECH\GomEncoder\presets\" and it will show on the preset menu.

[=Preview / Set Segment =] (::picture here::)
- [Select a segment...] : will let you encode just a piece of a movie, saving you the need to crop first. Quite a lot of control here, and also preview.
- [Select Audio] : If your movie has more than one stream, choose it from here.
- [Audio Settings] : Sync / Gain compensation (nice!)

[=Output Type=] MUST be AVI. (that's the fisrt box on the Settings page)

[=Codec=] (::picture here::)
- [Video Codec] : DivX MPEG-4 Video v4 (OpenDivX) - plays always.
- [Video Codec] : 3 encoding methods 1Pass-CBR, 1Pass-VBR, 2Pass-CBR (2pass is the best quality)
- Bitrate / Keyframe / Video Quality (when using 1pass quality based) are selectable. Like I said, higher bitrate = higher quality. Don't go above original...
- [Audio Codec] : the only option is MPEG-1 Layer 3 Audio.
- [Audio Codec] : MUST be CBR, Quality 100 is the best.

[=Video=] (::picture here::)
- Size MUST be 320x240
- Ratio = Cut & Paste (a compromise between black bars and side crop) - highly recommended.
- Ratio = Crop image (cuts out the left / right side so image fills the screen)
- Ratio = Add padding (keeps the whole picture, but adds black bars)
- Checking "Stretch video..." will FILL the 320x240 screen, distorting the image
- Image settings and Video effect are also here.

[=Sound=] (::picture here::)
- Here you can change bitrate (not needed actually)
- Normalizer is recomended, especially for a portable device.
- Also if you wish add your Winamp DSP plugins here.

[=Subtitle=] (::picture here::)
- I belive everything is self explanatory.
- What is missing here is a "Code Page" setting for the font. You'll get funny symbols if your language is not English for the subs, or use a custom font.

NOTES:
  • It does a pretty fast encode (not as fast as Badak) but produces better quality videos. (Where BADAK finishes in 38s GomEnc finishes in 68s)
  • It often uses a higher video bitrate than you specify, therefore you will get a slightly bigger file than Badak at the same rates.
  • I have even tried a 1900 Kbs encode and plays just fine on clix2 (v1.10 or v1.14). Everything above 2MBs gets an error on playback. (But why on earth would you want to encode 320x240 content @ 2MBs ????)
  • I also get good results with 1-pass VBR video encode (Quality based) = half the time to encode.

- VBR Audio in movie will NOT even load on Clix2.
- GomEncoder only offers CBR and VBR in two quality versions Quality 100 and Quality 30 for various standard bitrates (32, 48, 64, 96, 128, 192, 256, 320 only).
-A 96 Kbs with 30 Quality means a metallic sound. Always go for 100!
XvidForPSP v4.115 (* updated)
This another FREE tool I have found to do a proper job. You can download the v4.115 here :: Winnydows: Soft for PSP, iPod and PC.
I had problems with v4.115 so I had to switch back to 114. Also it screwed up my FFDShow codecs, replacing them with older ones, so I had to re-install K-Lite Mega Codec Pack again...

I know that a tool that has PSP will not be one considered for a Clix2 Video Conversion but surprisingly (and without any clix profiles) I was able to do a perfect conversion with every option imaginable. (DVD Rip, split, join, post-processsing, 3-pass encoding, Lanczos, Gauss resize, denoize, sharpen, custom matrix and loads more). This is possible because besides MEncoder (like most of the other free tools) you will find, nicelly put together, the rest of the "pro" free tools like DVD Shrink, AviSynth, AVIMux, MP4Box, DGMPGDec etc.

NOTE:
  • I just started working with XvidForPSP, but so far I was unable to find a "save preset" or settings or something. (and you'll have do set them again with every batch = annoying). Also once a job finished it will not be on the batch list so you have a very poor batch list implementation.
  • What I did for Clix2: (just the essential settings)

[= Main =]
- [Core] - Format: AVI
- [Presets] - Codec: 2-pass (but is up to you) - more passes = more time
- [Video] - Codec: DivX (the Xvid does Bframes and won't play on clix2)
- [Video] - Bitrate: (whatever, clix2 seems to do just fine)
- [Video] - Size: (use this when 2-pass to make fixed size files)
- [Audio] - Codec: MP3 CBR (a must, or error upon playback)
- [Audio] - Bitrate / Normalize (whatever)
- [Resize] - Resolution: 320x240 (obviously)
- [Resize] - Aspect: 1.333 (4:3) (set this one first to see 320x240 res)
- [Resize] - AspectFix: Black / Crop (must not disable if you want REAL 320x240)

[= Advanced =]
- [Rate] - Samplerate: (I have noticed that this also does not matter, clix2 will play even if not 44100)
- [Rate] - Framerate: (as it was clarified can be anything up to 30)
- whatever you see interesting (Resize method, Brightnesss, DeInterlace etc)

- On similar settings (vid/aud bitrate, 2-pass) XvidForPSP was way faster than BADAK and produced higher quality videos. Not true anymore, Badak 2007.1007 is just as fast...
- I have not tried the more exotic conversions yet (DVD, flv, mov, wmv)

Despite the spartan interface, It played just fine on the Clix2. You can get it from :: here ::
Let me summarise what it worked... (top to bottom)

(::settings screenshot::) and profile SUPER_Clix2_profile.zip (unpack and right click in SUPER -> "Import settings from file...")

1. [Output Container] = avi (obviously)
2. [Output Video Codec] = DivX (I don't know why, but XviD gives me more playback problems on the clix, in general)
3. [Output Audio] = mp3 (being an audio player first, clix2 will play whatever 2ch, as long as is mp3)
- I choose ffmpeg (seems to be faster than MEncoder, and the other 2 I have not tried yet)
- If for some input sources you cannot convert you can check DirectShow Decode, but leave it uncheck for most avi's
- [VIDEO]
-- [Video Scale Size] = 320:240 (until we hear of a firmware hack we HAVE to stick with the AMOLED resolution)
-- [Aspect] = You can leave it unchecked or force one. (SUPER is smart enough to add black bars....)
-- [Frame/Sec] = It will select auto the one from the input file. If not you should keep the same FPS as in original source and this way avoid A/V sync issues. Not a problem for Clix2.
-- [Bitrate] = I found out that 336 or 384 kbps is decent enough for the 2.2" screen.


NOTE: with 336kbs video and 112 mp3 audio you will get ~3.5 MB / minute of video, that's 250-300 MB / movie (1h30m) just so you know...)
NOTE: Using GSpot v2.70a (latest) you can check you avi. You should have no (B) frames and a Qf above 150 - Qf = Quality Factor - anything below that its blocky & ugly and you definitelly don't want that.

---[-] Top Qulity = when I check this the result is blocky and worse , so DON't check it.
---[-] Stretch It = only if you want to, but you are better to do something similar using Crop / Pad, to keep A/R.

NOTE: Range selection is actually 2 options:
- [Do Not Encode The First] = start the encoding from xxx (in seconds) - if you want to skip some intro, etc...
- [Encode Only For A Total Duration Of] = usefull if you want to test settings, say 60s and see if it plays.

- [AUDIO]
-- [ ] Stream Copy = if is mp3 you can just save yourself quality loss and time, but file will be bigger.
-- [Sampling Freq] = should be the same with original (usually 48000)
-- [Channels] = 1 or two simple (no Joint Stereo option, no AC3 but that not something to worry with clix isn't it?)
-- [Bitrate] = 112 is ok, 96 if you're desperate for size, 160 for good sound. (always check the original, no reason to say 192 if orig is 137, better to copy stream or go with 128)
-- [DVD / Stream select] = maybe original is dual-audio, choose from here what to convert.


NOTES: For reasons unknown SUPER has only RIGHT-Click MENU. So eveything that is not on main screen is probably on the context menu...
- To add a movie : right click (anywhere but title) --> Add multimedia file... (and it will appear on the bottom list)
- To see a movie properties : Double click on it in the list, another long window pops out to show something like MediaInfo, about your source...

Avidemux v2.4 r3322
One of the best overall app for video processing. FREE. You can find it ::here::
Basically a frontend for MEencoder and AviSynth. It comes with 3 user interfaces GTK+, Qt4 and command line. (I used GTK+, because Qt4 seemed bugged and command line is not very user friendy...)

In order to produce a playable file on your Clix2 with Avidemux you have to go through 3 basic steps:
  1. [Video] = select "MPEG-4 ASP (Xvid4)"
    - [Main]
    -- Two pass average bitrate = specify a bitrate.
    -- Two pass final size = specify a target size for the file. (nice!)
    -- Same Qz as input = use same compression settings as source - not recommended for a Clix2 conversion....
    -- Single pass = 2 variants (bitrate / quatitizer) - only if you're in a hurry.
    -- Leave the boxes on the bottom UN-Checked. Or not if you know what they do... (I won't explain them here)
    - [Motion & Misc]
    -- Advanced Simple Profile = Number of B-frames = 0 (NO Qpel, NO GMC, NO BVHQ)
    -- The rest leave it as it is. Won't hurt. (::see picture::)
    - [Quantization]
    -- H.263 and leave everything as it is. (min=2 / max =31)
    - [Second Pass]
    -- defaults are just fine for a 320x240 encode. (from top to bottom: 0,0,0,5,5,0,0,5)
  2. [Audio] = select "MP3 (LAME)"
    - [Channel mode] : Stereo (also tested joint / mono and works)
    - [Bitrate mode] : MUST be CBR. I tried ABR and it won't play, strange because Badak's ABR plays fine...
    - [Quality] : 2 (default) is ok, (0= highest quality / longer to process 9 = lowest quality)
    - [Bitrate] : 112 seems fine to me, but you are free to try what you like
    - You have some audio filters to play with if you wish. I have to point out the "Mixer" audio filter. You will need that to convert AC3 to Stereo.
  3. (Menu) --> Video --> Filters (or click Filters button, below Configure...)
    - Add a Resize Filter (:: picture here ::)
    -- "MPlayer resize" is faster than "Resize" which is slower but more precise. (select by double click)
    -- check [ ] 16 round up (MPlayer is happier that way)
    -- use "Bicubic" (from dropdownlist), (as a note: Lanzocs3 is better for up-scaling - enlargement, as it makes sharper results, bilinear is fastest but blocky, bicubic is great for reduction because makes picure smoother and more compresible)
    -- to keep a pixel ratio of 1:1 (you don\t want to distort the picture) I recommend using the slider until "Width" is 320 and remember the "Height" value. Height, if source is not with an A/R of 1.33 will be less than 240, that is not what we want, so substract from 240 "Height" and divide by 2. Why? to find out the size of those black bars we are going to add next up and down.

    - Add a Black Borders Filter (double click on "Add black Borders")
    -- Fill the Top border and Bottom border with the results from previous steps.
    -- example: Source is 624x352, we resize to 320 x 176, so we need to fill 64 pixels with black to obtain a desired 320x240 image. Logic choice is adding 32 pixels up and 32 pixels down. (Of couse you could add 48 down and 16 up if you wish more space for subs...)
    -- If you want to optimize (reduce the black bordes as much as possible), you could also add a "Crop" filter (put it first) and trim the left and right side a little, resize and then add less black. (just a hint of course)

    - You should see the two added filters in the "Active Filters" list on the right. Click "Close"
    - I must remind you that Subtitles are added also from here ! (just the basics, but here you can finally set your favourite "Code Page")

KawaiiRiver v0.17
- This one looks and works like iRiveter and I found it to be slower as well.
- Not much to say here except the name, it IS iRiveter.

PocketDivXEncoder v0.3.96
PocketDivXEncoder just like MediaCoder won't give me playable results.
Don't get me wrong when I say the resulted vide won't play it doesn't mean it is impossible, just that it didn't happen right away or after some tweaking.

MediaCoder v0.6.0 build 3760
I probably lost myself through the settings, because everything I've encoded will not play on clix2. (not to worry, it's just me. On other forums I see great results with it).

I also tried the CMD way with MENCODER and FFMPEG but obviously my poor scripting skills did not render acceptable (and fast) results.

SolveigMM AVITrimmer v1.5
It has nothing to do with conversion / iRiver, but I thought I should mention it here. Why is that? Let me explain...
- It is the ONLY FREE tool that will cut your movies without recompression.
- It handles ALL video sources (no, it won't cut your DVDs / MKVs / OGMs)
- It does not screw the audio (no sync problems even with AC3 audio / VBR sound)
- small footprint (3 MB)
- very fast

YouTube conversion (by BongMong)
* Download YouTube Downloader :: from here ::
Then you can easily download YouTube videos.

* To convert, select 'Manual conversion' and use the following parameter string:

* If you want to replace the ffmpeg build that comes with YouTube Downloader with the latest recommended build from here (looks better to me), you can:

* Just replace the ffmpeg.exe file in the YouTube Downloader install directory with the latest one. If you do, you will need the more up-to-date syntax for the parameter string:

* These parameter strings use the bitrate limits from Wiki regarding YouTube so you shouldn't get a loss in quality. If the video or audio source is lower than maximum YouTube quality, you may get a little inflation in size. You could trim for each conversion, but the point of this is an easy 'Podcast' like way of grabbing video, so I just stick to these figures.

* Note that this uses ffmpeg and the version supplied seems to convert file names to dos short names (8x3) which is annoying. I have tried using a different build of ffmpeg and YouTube Downloader wouldn't run it. If anyone knows how to solve this little annoyance, please do tell.

Once you have set it up, it remembers the settings and is a very simple YouTube grab-and-play system. Try it, you might like it!

The only thing (for now) that I can see which might cause your converted files to not-compatible with clix2 is: the video codec isn't really DIVX or XVID, it is MPEG 4 Simple Profile @ level 3.

Yes, and also the fact that you cannot have B frames.
I think DivX gives a better / faster compression that Xvid, at least using those "point+click" tools.

mencoder uses the same mpeg 4 compression whether you specify divx or xvid. It just changes the -ffourcc tag to DIVX or XVID.

mencoder works flawlessly for me; here's a sample command line that I use for the clix2:

mencoder.exe C:\temp\tenoclocknews_20070620-1500_40_st.avi -srate 44100 -vf-add scale=-3:240,crop=320:240,eq2=1.0:1.0:0.1:1:1:1:1:1, harddup -oac mp3lame -lameopts cbr:br=128:mode=0 -ovc lavc -ffourcc DIVX -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=802 -o C:\temp\tenoclocknews_20070620-1500_40_st.DivX.avi


Obviously, you'd want to change the filenames / directories. You could drop the scale, crop, and eq2 parameters as well.

thanks for that great list of encoders ! will give a try to XvidForPSP & Badak !
Already tried several others including non-free softwares ... and I will see how they compare.

The Clix2 will not play anything that is NOT 30 fps AND 320x240. That I am sure.
  • The thing I don't like about Xvid4PSP is that you'll have to go edit (most) of the video conv params (bitrate, framerate, res, AR) each time you add a file to the batch.
  • Another thing you cannot controll is the default LAME alghoritm - q2 (even q0 on Ultra settings) that despite the high audio quality takes quite a long time, much more than, q6 or q7...

The good thing is that you can edit the mencoder CMD line to "tweak" it a little more...

Just tested it. Using 23.976, 24, 25, 29,97. And it works. This is great, less time converting. (I will edit the first post with corrected data...).

But still, v1.10 will not play anything above 320x240 or without CBR audio.

GOM Encoder just got updated. (same DL link). Now will expire September 30 (and still requires internet access every run).
If you're really bugged by the logo, you can change it (look into the install dir/logo/...) or edit setting.ini @ [WATERMARK]...

Post DVD Ripper for Clix2

Hi there,

I am new to the Clix and to the whole ripping DVD's into a format you can play on the Clix II. This is my first MP3 player, so please excuse my ignorance.

I have read this thread and have had some limited joy with DVD's......
If I use the XVid4PSP software, i stick in a DVD and it tells me it is indexing? I leave it for over an hour and it is still at 0%?

If anyone can help I would be grateful. In short, I would like to use a 'simple' programme where it will read my DVD, and transform it into a file, hopefully quite small in size, with good quality and good voice sync?
