Since I already had them on my computer coz I have a pda - I've been trying out the Pocket PC profiles with different bitrate & quality settings with these two programs:

3gp converter - MobileHackerz - [携帯向けに簡単に動画を変換してみよう]
It has English support, very very simple frontend for the ffmpeg encoder and what I use for my mobile phone. Its what I use when I just need to quickly convert something before I leave the flat.

SUPER Video Convert - SUPER ゥ .
Much more options and customisable than the above, converts practically every format into every other format... also provides slightly smaller file sizes than the above but slightly slower at encoding.

They both do batch drag and drop encoding and so far my clix2 plays everything they chuck out perfectly with no problems. (^_^)

When I use XvidForPSP v4.114 to rip a DVD (which I own, by the way - legal!), the output AVI is perfect...except that the sound is delayed by almost a second, with everything being "heard" after it is "seen!" Does anyone know how to fix this problem?


My other problem is that I can no longer use iriverter because there is no audio at all...if anyone can help me with either of these problems, it would be greatly appreciated.

BoredMan, what did you find on the settings for the 3gpConverter? Which profile works best for quality and playback ability for the clix2gen? Are there multiple that work well? Which one is fastest?

Is it delayed when you view it both on your computer and on your Clix or is the delay just on the Clix?

I've been using SUPER before I got the Clix and just converted some .rmvb and divX files with no problems. The settings to use basically the same for XvidForPSP. Both use MENcoder, but personally I use these settings:

Output Container: avi
Output Video Codec: DivX
Output Audio Codec: mp3

VIDEO
Video Scale Size: 320:240
Aspect: 4:3
Frame/Sec: Whatever you like
Bitrate: Whatever you like
Hi Quality

AUDIO
Sampling Freq: 44100
Channels: 2
Bitrate: Whatever you like

It encodes basically whatever you like, even YouTube videos. Just drag it into the box and click "Encode" Or Right Click "Add Multimedia Files"

P.S. I can upload the profile for SUPER I think, how can I attach this?

Well you have to take into account I'm using a 1.5 old laptop with a 1.6 Ghz Centrino and only 1GB of RAM, but a 45 min clip took around 35 mins?

Fastest Video Conversion software with settings

Well, that works well because that is what I am using. 1.5yrold laptop 1.6 centrino and 1 gb of RAM.

It still takes me about 3 hours to convert a 700MB file which is 58min's long. I will try it out today. Thanks

Side note. I can get mencoder to run pretty fast, but when I encode with the -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=384 - File can't be read on clix, but does play on laptop. Vid compression says FFDS
and
-vf-add scale=-3:240,crop=320:240,eq2=1.0:1.0:0.1:1:1:1:1:1, --- is it because it isn't in letterbox? How do I convert to letterbox?

so I tried to encode with Xvid instead.
-ovc xvid -xvidencopts bitrate=384 - File can't be read on clix and takes 100 times longer, but can play it on my laptop.

Wow, that was a lot of Mencoder frustration I am venting, but if anyone could shed some light I would appreciate it. And yes I am a novice, not n00b, when it comes to this but I have been Googleing and reading a ton.

Alls I can say is "eeeeeeeeexcellent" That is hands down the best of all the products that I have seen, speed, quality, ease of use. I have officially found my video conversion tool. Thank you Thank you Thank you SUPER FREAKING ROCKS!!!!

Question about it: Can you embedd subtitles?

Whoops, sorry I haven't been on these boards very much - looks like you've found your ideal settings already but for anyone else browsing I'll answer the original question anyway.

For the 3gpConverter program I've been using the default PocketPC profile that comes with the install. The settings I choose depends on the type of video I'm converting (as in if its a movie, tv show or anime), how much time I have to convert and whether its just for the train ride to work or something I wanna show off to friends. So err.. there's no one profile that I use all the time.

With 3gpConverter however the profiles are split into:
Normal Quality Mono 15fps,
Normal Quality Stereo 15fps,
High Quality Mono 29.97fps,
High Quality Stereo 29.97fps,

So its pretty easy to figure out which profiles will take the longest to encode and their quality and so on. In general depending on your computer - High quality takes about 1.5x longer to encode over Normal quality... and again, the difference in quality depends on the type of video you're watching - I tend to notice it more with animations while regular tv look the same to me on both normal and high quality.

I can't remember the bitrates they use but I think its something like 300bps and 500bps respectively.

But since making that original post about the two programs, I've matched the 3gp settings in SUPER coz there's just more tweakable options in SUPER.


Oh and one last thing, I posted this on the forums before but nobody replied so I'm not sure if its just my player - but I've since found that setting the fps of the output video to anything other than 29.97 will mess up the total time display on the clix trackbar, the video will play fine. But the correct time is only shown when the fps is set to 29.97... Might just be me though.

What encodes faster DIVX or Xvid? Is there a noticable difference with video kbps above 384?
DX50 or Divx or XVID at the end for the codec? speediest?

Xvid seems slightly faster on my lowly laptop (1.86GHz Pentium M and a gig of RAM).

Thanks so much everyone for all of their input. It is time consuming to keep trying all of these settings over and over again, but I am glad to have found a solution in SUPER that is the fastest I have seen with tons of settings.

Ok, I mean, using the settings you had above(avi, Divx, mp3, with DX50 codec not sure what the difference is with these 5 settings) with 384 and 768 kbps did the first part of the 300 movie (715MB) in 52 minutes at 384kbps and the second part at 716MB at 768kbps in 53 minutes.

So these are great results for me and thanks again BoredMAN and Dap_pad for your help... I have a couple of other questions.

How can I make the movie letterbox using SUPER? Also is there a way to embed subtitles into the avi like mencoder claims to be able to do? Thanks again everyone

You can hardcode subtitles directly into the video by specifying the 'sub' option during encoding
mencoder -ovc xvid -xvidencopts fixed_quant=5 -oac copy -sub subtitles.srt -o output.avi input.avi

Unfortunately, SUPER doesn't have a subtitle tool yet, since it can't rip DVDs. If you want to hard embed your subtitles you'll have to do it while your actually ripping your DVD or with another program. SUPER is purely converting. Glad you like it though. I'll try looking for some programs for you.

I've tried Super and I'd also like to find out the answer. Gom seems to automatically letterbox.
