Clix is not AAC-friendly, and iTunes isn't clix-friendly. (It's a jungle out there.) Unfortunately you need to convert the songs or re-rip them. I've read that iTunes doesn't do MP3 very well (but I haven't tried it myself), so you'd be well advised to use MM instead.
How about trying an AAC to MP3 conversion first, to see how it compares to re-ripping? It's unlikely to do the sound quality any favours but it would save a lot of disk-feeding tedium - depending on how many CDs you have.
But if you are prepared to start from scratch, and you're a fussy listener, please consider trying Ogg Vorbis. It really is rather good.
