Ted
1st, thanks for your help.
I followed your instructions, and when I disconnected my Clix from my PC, it gave me a message "Don't turn off, updating your firmware" or something like that.
I then got a message "Firmware failed to update"....
Haven't tried it again. Not sure what went wrong, guess I'll have to try it again.
Thanks!

Does this require the player to reformat? Any, known BUGS solved?

You don't have to reformat it. Personally, I don't like it so far. No bugs or anything, just the added rhapsody options in the main menu and music menu. I don't use rhapsody so they are somewhat of a nuisance.

Bugs fix can not be 'seen', so please be patient for iriver to release the detail of this update (the detail is usually released a few days after the firmware.).

Theres no difference except rhapsody, new theme, and a new boot screen. They should make a very big update on the firmware if they want to upgrade it.

There are probably more 'invisible' fixes to known bugs. I mean, you could be right, but don't wanna jump to conclusions too quickly.

Okay, I didn't see too many changes but a lot of things are easy to miss.
1) Rhapsody support including account information, artist information and the channels.
2) 17% transfer speed improvement.
3) I can no longer hit the fast forward bug. This was an intermitant problem but I could usually make it happen, so it's probable that it was addressed.
4) Added support for two new properties: Hidden and Sync ID. This is likely because rhapsody uses them for optimizations but you will notice that files can now be marked as hidden when you browse through the shell. (Like the albums folder)
Questions:
I can't remember if 1.07 supported playback speed on ogg files or not - if not it is supported now.
Likewise I don't remember if 1.07 supported saving positions for each of your avi files (rather then just the most recent one) - if not it is supported now.
Obviously the major update here is rhapsody support. I'm sure this was not trivial for them and is something a significant number of people were asking for. I'm also sure there were bug fixes that I missed.

You should always format it after updating the firmware. You have no idea if they made a database change or not and if they did you are just asking to corrupt and hang your device by not formatting. It's really cheap insurance so you might as well buy it.
PS: The original clix never needed this, but I have found when updating the firmware on the clix2 I often have to hit the reset button in adition to formatting to get all of the new settings applied correctly. It is probably just a matter of holding the UI in memory or some such, but again it's a pretty cheap step to make sure things are running well.

Possible Bugs in 1.08
If there is one thing I learned back when the Nano was my primary MP3 player was... if it's working without issues, then be happy and do not update the firmware. The same rule should have applied here, but I couldn't resist.
First, thanks for the link and advice - it worked as described. Problem is there seem to be a few minor bugs - at least there are for me. The problem area is the feature UCI. I tried to save my preferred theme and font. It will only retain the theme, the font returns to the default Basic. And to add insult to injury, the theme that I chose is now my permanent theme - it will not display any other themes on restart. At least I'm stuck with the theme I prefer. Hopefully, mine is an isolated case.
Good luck,
El Mono

If you don't like 1.08, the 1.07 file is still on the server and you can downgrade it. Check out the FAQ for how to do it manually.

I installed the new firmware yesterday. Today, when I try to add some stuff to my Clix2 through windows explorer, it won't let me. It says that the device is either not responding or has been disconnected. I can remove items, but not place them in there. Now I want to downgrade the firmware, but have no way to do so. Please help.

Yes, you don't have to, but you need to do it in order not to 'choke' your clix.
Not formating after firmware update often results in lagging on music / video playback or extremely slow navigation respond because the older database won't get updated along side with the firmware. Therefore you need to format the player in order to 'clean out' all the old database and allows your clix to rebuild a new one according to the new firmware. You might or might not face this problem, but it is a very common problem that happens frequently to users who choose not to format, so why take the chance? Leaving it as it is essentially just turns it into an unpredictable time bomb.
Now as we told you why you should format, the rest is up to you.

But if I do format it, I am afraid that when I do so I will not be able to get the files that I backed up back onto it. Whenever I try to add a file to it in windows explorer it says that I cannot because the device is either disconnected or not responding. I really would like help to this.

1.08 UMS working perfectly fine for me. no hanging or hiccups. seems alot faster (GUI and transfer speed). not sure if there were any battery improvements or any other enhancements. probably some general bug fixes here and there.

First try resetting it to see if your problem goes away.
Next reformat to see if the problem is fixed.
If you are still stuck change it from MTP to UMS or UMS to MTP (switch to whatever you aren't using) then see if you can put files on it.
Once you get it working correctly you can put the old firmware back if you wish.
On the save uci comment above: I see it not saving the font, but I still see all my themes and can change them after doing the save uci.
ALL:
It is very important that you realize you are grabbing firmware directly from iriver's server which curently is not exposed through ANY updater. This means that you are playing the part of a beta tester and there may be hidden consequences - for instance this firmware could permantly "lock you in" to the rhapsody firmware branch. I have no idea if it does or not since I haven't tried going back. Please think about the consequences prior to making the leap - if you are fine with the risk, go ahead - if you aren't then wait a while until other brave people have forged the road for you.

Clieos, thanks for the advice about returning to 1.07. Actually, I like 1.08. The initial observation (problem with saving font) just reminded me of previous experiences I had with the iPod and iTunes upon updating - albeit minor. I downloaded 1.07, the hex file is actually slightly larger than the new one. Nevertheless, I think I'll stick with 1.08 for now. Also, thanks to you and Ted about the reformatting advice. The install went very smoothly as a result.
Ted, your correct - you can change the theme without any trouble. The difference, as far as I can tell, is that one has to reset the device now to be able to change the theme. I like the basic font, but I miss having a font, such as Century Gothic, set as my 'default.'
Thanks to both of you for the advice,
El Mono
