I just use UMS mode and drop readily-tagged files onto the Clix, but today I thought I should start up Iriver 3 Plus and check for FW version.

It said I (the Clix2) had FW 1.14, and asked if I wanted to install 1.17. It copied the FW to my Clix2, than said to press "Finish" and the player would be disconnected, which Windows gave me a message about.

Iriver 3 Plus didn't (but the manual did) mention that I should remove the USB cable for the update to begin, but when I did so nothing happened. By looking at the instruction for manual update, the file U20CLIX.HEX should be in the root folder. However, on my Clix2 it's in the System folder...

Reconnecting the Clix2 again, and starting Iriver 3 Plus gives me a new question if I want to upgrade from 1.14 to 1.17, and a Yes gives the same result - no U20CLIX.HEX in the root folder.

I will backup, copy the 1.17 FW (for being sure from the FW archive here), reformat and restore - but I'm anyway interested in how this could happen... Many more must have updated their FW before me, and I haven't found anything like this mentioned?

edit: The problem was fixed. Can I delete U20CLIX.HEX and U20CLIX.sys from the root and system folder?

When I upgraded to 1.17, I didn't use iriver plus 3, because it said 1.16 was the most recent version. So I just copied U20CLIX.HEX into the root and disconnected the USB. As you would expect, it updated OK.

It seems weird that the new version doesn't put the hex file in the right place; I wonder whether anyone else has noticed this. But let's face it, ip3 isn't much good for anything really, and if it can't even update the firmware that's par for the course.

pikoli: I'm not sure that you should delete U20CLIX.sys from the /sys folder. It looks like a config file, and it is only 1KB. But U20CLIX.HEX shouldn't be there AFAIK. You seem to be saying that you have a HEX file in the root after you've updated. That's not right, surely. When you fixed the problem, what did you do?

I copied U20CLIX.HEX from the system folder into the root foder. Actualy, after firmware upgrade, U20CLIX.HEX in the root directory was deleted by itsef.

I had the same problem. I downloaded and installed iriver plus 3 (3.5.0.2) today. It suggested upgrading to firmware version 1.20, but it seems to put the file (U20CLIX.HEX) in the wrong place (\system) so the upgrade doesn't happen. I copied the file to the root directory and the upgrade happened as soon as I unplugged the USB cable.
