my sister's 4 gb model updates to 1.17 but when I try to update my red line it only see's ver 1.16 as the most current update. also she can update the 4gb model using the iriver update utility in MSC mode. mine says it must be in MTP mode in order to update.

Sometime, MTP updater doesn't get update as fast as iriver plus 3 (they are on two different servers). Anyway, check out the firmware archive.

my redline updated to verson 1.17 fine. I use iriver plus 3 software in MSC/UMS mode and used that software to upgrade firmware.

my mtp mode 8gb also says 1.16 is still latest, but i see on the iriver us site that 1.17's been out for a week. guess we just have to wait a bit.

My guess is, you won't see v1.17 any time soon (most likely never) on MTP side. If you want it than do a manual update.
