Question License issues with subscription content

Hi all,

My wife has had some issues with apparently losing the licenses for Yahoo subscription music on her 2G clix. She's had it since before Christmas, and twice now she's had all the subscription content become unplayable. The first time it looked like the date on the clix had been reset (somehow) and pushed back to before the content was originally downloaded, which would cause it to be expired. That was easy to fix. Once the date was set properly, the songs were playable again. However, this time, I'm at a bit of a loss. The date was set properly, and the content shouldn't have expired all at the same time. Some tracks had only been downloaded the week before. My guess is that the license store had been corrupted somehow. It is weird though that everything worked fine on Saturday, and then after not using it at all on Sunday, it was broken on Monday. We fixed the problem by formating the device and then re-syncing the content, but we really don't want to do that all the time. Any ideas what could have caused this? Any ideas for avoiding this issue?

The firmware had been updated recently, so I think it's running the latest. I've had no issues using content form the same source on my 4G.

Thanks in advance,
Blair

I have a lot of problems with "insufficient rights" on my Clix 2GB using Rhapsody, as well ... it's so frustrating. Some tracks will download and play to my Clix and some won't ... and I can't seem to fix it, either.

Maybe Ted Yo! or Clieos could help in here. Personally I don't like the subscription services for my music, so I don't use those, but if the Clix is not working as it should with such content, then there's a problem, and I hope it is a reasonably easy to fix one too.

Upon further investigation, I think the clix is behaving properly. The problem was with my understanding of how the licensing is handled by subscription services. I had assumed that when downloading content, the license would be valid for 30 days from download. This doesn't look to be the case. The content is only valid until the end of your payment period (i.e. when your next monthly payment is due). In my case, it looks like our payment date is around the 18th of the month, so all subscription content would expire then. In order to renew the content, my next monthly payment would have to be made and then the clix would need to be connected to the Yahoo client for the licenses to be renewed for the next 30 day period. I had been looking for a way to explicitly renew the licenses in the Yahoo client, but it's an automatic thing when you connect and scan the device. The licenses on the PC would get updated by the client as well. Our problem was that we don't use the client to sync content, but use WMP which won't refresh the licenses. The next time we see this issue, we'll probably just have to connect the clix to the Yahoo client and the songs shoulld be playable again.

Thanks to those that replied,

Blair

There are two things to point out:

1) While it does go by payment date most services will allow you to refresh the license a few days before it expires, I don't think Yahoo is an exception to this.

2) WMP will update your license, but you need to actually sync something to make it happen. All it takes is one track, but it doesn't do the refresh when during enumeration.

If you ever have questions about your license you can right click on the file in WMP and go to the license details tab. This will show when it expires, how many more times you can sync it and if it can be burned or not.

Thanks Ted!

It's good to know that I'll be able to refresh the licenses a little early. I'm going on vacation shortly, and I wouldn't want my licenses to expire right after I leave.

Ted, hoping you can clarify for me...

First off: I have an 8GB Clix 2, onto which I installed the v1.17 Rhapsody firmware a few weeks back. I had been having various transfer / synch issues, and decided to start from scratch. I uninstalled and re-installed Rhapsody. In the process, I needed two sessions with Real support in which they had me uninstall and re-install Helix files, update WMP, and load a Microsoft "security update". Then, I did a 1.17 firmware re-install+device format on 2/18. I've had several days of problem free content transfer / synch between Rhapsody and my Clix2. Cool!!

But the license expiration date of 3/19 has not changed since my device format. What I've done since the device format:
2/18: transfer a Rhapsody channel and a playlist
2/19: transfer a 2nd Rhapsody channel and 2 more playlists.

Real Networks bills me on the 17th of each month.

Based on my transfer / synch activity and billing schedule, should the license expiration date on my player have changed?

Many thanks!

-Tom

Moderators,

Apologies. I just realized this is a Clix Gen1 forum, and a year old thread. ( I was keying off the day / month of the last post, not the year...)

If there is a better place for my previous, please feel free to move it there....

Thanks,
Tom
