Question Lost memory space

probably a stupid question but as i was adding tracks (all less than 3mb) to my clix it failed sync correctly the first time and worked fine the second time before adding about 6 tracks (totalling 25mb) there was well over 1gb after there's now 645mb does anyone have any idea where abouts 500mb might have been used up and if it's possible to get it back i'm perplexed as to where it's disappeared to

Well the first thing that occurs to me concerns that old chestnut, the different definitions of a GigaByte: binary or decimal based. The difference between 7.5*2^30 Bytes and 7.5*10^9 Bytes is 553 MB, which is suspiciously close to what you've 'lost'. To check whether this is the reason, have a think about where your before and after figures came from. Was one from the clix info screen and one from windows for example?

If that's the case, you haven't lost anything, it's just a different way of counting your Bytes.

Some space is used up by firmware.
There is also a method for emptying the players recycle bin but that (please correct me if I'm wrong) may only work for UMS or HD players.

Recycle bin?? does a clix have one?
i wouldn't think it's a firmware problem it's still on version 1.11 i've not updated it since having the player

if it helps the player froze druing transerring tracks and some I/O operation had to be aborted and it said not to remove the usb on the clix screen but i had to, to get the transer to work again (it's happened once or twice before and wasn't a problem)

Maybe this time when the transfer froze up and you disconnected the USB, the file system got a bit trashed. (I had that happen to a thumb drive before, but never to my clix 2.) In which case, I suppose that a format should fix it.

If you're not willing to do that yet, you could try running disk diagnostics on the mounted clix. (My Computer -> Removable Disk -> Properties -> Tools -> Error Checking.) It might find thousands of lost clusters...

Thanks mike i shall give the disk diagnostics a try i'd rather not reformat as it has a number of songs from napster on it that i think have now used up the number of times it can transferred to a portable device

Edit: slight problem the player doesn't come up with options only open, explore & format so i cant try disk diagnostics

You need to connect in UMS mode to check for errors, not MTP mode. In UMS mode it will simply show up as another drive with a drive letter. Windows will treat it as a normal storage volume rather than a music device. Thing is, switching modes will wipe the player. Back up first.

Try puttin your clix in UMS (if 'tis not already, be careful as you will lose all the stuff on your player) then opening it in windows explorer, emptying the recycle bin on your computer.
That should empty the players 'hidden' recycle bin.

From the top-level menu:

Settings > Advanced > Connection Type > MSC(UMS) > OK
