Question: Do I need an amp?

Hello!
Eversince I first plugged-in the supplied earbuds in my gen2 Clix I have been complaining about their capabilities(why, if I pay about 200$ for an mp3-player don't they give me at least the equivalent of 10$ buds is beyond me) and last week I decided they needed a change. On my last device, an LG, I had some Panasonic ones(8$ worth) that sounded amazingly good for their price(mild bass, clear mids and highs and a deep sound to almost any song), but broke after a year, and since the old ones sounded so good I went and bought from the same maker. To go with my new-and-shiny device I payed 25$ for Panasonic RP-HS22E, which, unfortunately, were a complete dissapointment! I can't say that I have neither big nor small ears, but these things just won't stay on like they should! When I get them to finally rest they leave a gap between the speaker and my ear, thus losing all the bass and having almost only high-pitched squeals and *whrrr* sounds. I am rather sick of buds and clip-ons so I searched high and low for full-sized headphones that I can affort and came across Sennheiser HD 201 and HD 202. Does the 8 Ohm impedance difference count, and would I hear anything if I plugged them without an amp in my Clix2? Would the battery die out in a couple of hours of listening? When does one really need an amp?

Sorry if someone already posted this question on one of these forums, but I read about half of them and searched the net and still didn't come across a concludent answer...

P.S. I would make a compromise and buy Creative EP630 but here they cost as much as 45$, which they clearly don't worth.

I don't know anything about amps but if you're willing to try a cheap canal type earphone, I hear that the JVC Marshmallows are pretty good. They have pretty good reviews over on head-fi.org. It's a pretty good site for headphone/earphone research. I just got Crossroads Mylarone X3's which I'm happy with but are a little expensive (for me at least!).

It isn't all about impedance, but also a headphone's sensibility. In general most 'phone with <64ohms should be fine without amp, unless it is insensitive, which is the case of HD201. HD202 is more sensitive, but unfortunately doesn't sound as good as HD201. I'll recommend you to get HD201 first, but you might have to turn the volume up a bit to get enough loudness. Once you try it, than you can decide for yourself whether an amp will help, but you shouldn't rush in to buy an amp until than. As for battery, it is your volume control that limit the output of your clix2, not headphone. Turn the volume up requires more power. Headphone draws very little power and can't seriously affect your battery life. Generally an amp becomes an requirement when headphone has >100ohms impedance.

For something really cheap and good, try Koss KSC75. This can easily be found on many RadioShack.

EP-630 should worth US$25 or so.

Thanks! I went to head-fi.org, and found loads of info, but when I searched the shops for the 'phones you recommended, found nothing but Koss. The thing is, I knew about KSC75 but was reluctant to buy them since I had so many problems with clip-ons. Did I understand correctly and one can twist them into any position to acommodate to his/her own ears?
...not even the marshmallows, let alone e2cs exist here...

You are right that KSC75 isn't particularly comfortable. BUt the real question is, how much is your budget and what kind of headphone you are looking into?

Thank you for the link, iriverforme.. I'll look into it.
Well.. now, having read some threads, I can honestly say that I'm dizzy from all the googleing and price searching and review reading and I haven't got the faintest clue to what I'd like.. My budget is low, having 40$(U.S.) tops and I'd really like the marshmallows but they don't have them here in Romania. On the other hand, I'd buy the Senn CX300 or even the HD201.. but the KSC75 have such good reviews.. or, maby some Plugs or Sparkplugs.. or the
Creative EP-630.. or.. or.. or.. *faints and dreams of Happy-Hairy-Land, where pink bunnies frolic and hold hands. "he-he!" he thinks to himself.. "this would look SO MUCH BETTER on my AMOLED display!"*

Aaaaanyway, I think I'll go with the CX300s, having just one more question: doesn't that wire get all tangled and how easily would it break?

Don't wires from basically any canal earbuds give off that resping sound? The Sony and Shure earbuds that I've been using do that, but my mind just filters it out now.. either that or I've subconsciously been trained to keep my upper torso very still :P

It is an effect called 'Microphonic'. Almost all canalphones' cable have certain degree of microphonic, except those used in high end Ultimate Ear IEM (which have very less of this problem). It is a reason why most expensive IEMs are designed to be wore in over-the-ear style, and other (such as Etymotic) come with shirt clip.
