You took my comment the wrong way.

As I had said before, the clock can / is designed to work at a lower voltage (lower than that needed for other function). It supposes to keep working even if the player can not long play music (due to low battery). However, if you somehow drain the battery too much, it will deplete to a point where the clock can not longer work.

For example, if you forgot to charge/change the battery in your watch and it stops working, can you say there is a major design flaw on the watch? You can't, because no watch will work without sufficient power. Same logic applies here.
